Laziness

“The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man’s precious possession”– Proverbs 12:27

Spiritually and practically, this verse continues to ring true!  One of the greatest problems in our nation today is the sin of laziness.  Man was created to work from the beginning.  Even before the Fall, God’s Word tells us that “the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it” (Genesis 2:15).  So, God created man to work.  That is not the result of the Fall.  The earth did begin to fight back with “thorns and thistles” after the Fall (Genesis 3:18).  However, God instructed work prior to this.

The New Testament commands believers to work jobs in the strongest of language.  For instance, 2 Thessalonians 3:10 says, “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat”.  Oh, how our nation would change if this were applied today!!  Now, Paul is not talking about those that cannot work due to illness or injury.  Numerous times Paul instructs believers to help those who are unable to help themselves.  He is speaking of those that are able to work and refuse to.

This is not the strongest passage on the subject, however.  1 Timothy 5:8 says, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever”.  This language could not be stronger.  To be a faithful child of God, we must work.  To do otherwise is to deny the faith!

The instruction to work does not only apply to physical things.  This is a spiritual truth as well.  For instance, 2 Peter 1:5-7 says, “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love”.  Notice we are to give “all diligence” in these things.  This means work at it!  All of these attributes oppose our natural tendencies.  If we are to grow in these things, we must apply ourselves.

Just a few verses later, Peter says “Therefore, beloved, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble” (2 Peter 1:10).  Diligence is one of the most important qualities in a child of God.  If we ever are going to enjoy our salvation, it will be the result of diligence.  It takes work!  Have you ever wondered why some live closer to the Lord?  Have you ever wondered why some seem to enjoy their salvation more than you do?  Perhaps they are putting more into it!  Commit to serve the Lord more today.  “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).
