The Golden Rule

Watering the Tulips

“And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” - Luke 6:31
The Golden Rule – how much better would our world be if all would consider this simple teaching? However, this teaching is ignored by most just as much as any deep, theological truth…maybe more.

What if a husband treated his wife the way he desired to be treated by her? What if a wife returned the same? Would not marriage be the most joyful human relationship known to man? Certainly, this is the way it is supposed to work. Marriage is not 50/50, as many suppose. It is 100/100! But just think…if the man gives his wife all he has to give and she returns the same, how wonderful would marriage be?

What if teenagers respected their parents the way they believe they should be respected? There’d be no need for curfews because they’d be in at a decent time. There’d be no concerned parents because children would always try to represent their parents positively. There’d be no back-talk. There would be no dirty rooms. There would be no clothes on the floor. If only we could grasp this simple, basic truth that Jesus taught!

What if co-workers always sought to treat their fellow employees in the way they wanted to be treated? The world would be devoid of unions for they wouldn’t be needed. There would be no HR departments. There would be no contracts because promises would be kept. Nobody would hate going to work because work would be great. Why can we not grasp such a simple teaching?

What if church members treated one another in the way they want to be treated? What if there was no gossip in the church? What if church members supported the way they expect everybody else to? What if members tithed the way they expect everybody else to? What if members attended the way they expect the pastor to? What if members studied the way they expect the pastor to?! Certainly, churches would be full of love and truth!

Inspired by God, Paul said, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). Oh that children of God would embrace these instructions! There’d be no poor in the church. There would be none that didn’t have support when they needed it. There would be no backbiting, no jealousy, and no bitterness! All would be based on love – for Jesus and for one another! Certainly, many of the theological teachings in the Bible are ignored by the modern religionist. However, the practical teachings of Jesus are just as ignored! If we would only hearken to the teachings of the Savior, those we affect would be influenced more positively by us.
