“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” – Matthew 6:34
How many endless hours do we spend thinking about things we cannot control? How often do we find ourselves worrying about situations that are totally out of our power? How common is it that we don’t get today’s tasks finished because we cannot quit thinking about tomorrow’s troubles? If we are honest, the passage before us addresses something which we are all commonly guilty of.
A child of God cannot live in the past. The past is full of mistakes and shortcomings. All we can do is learn from those many mistakes and move on. Even the Apostle Paul said, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead” (Philippians 3:13). Did Paul have some things in his past that he regretted? Without doubt! He had taken part in the murder of believers. He persecuted the church of God (1 Corinthians 15:9). He could have sat around dwelling on that constantly…but he didn’t. He lived in light of the blessed truth that “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…”(Romans 8:1). Learn from your mistakes and move on. If you do not, you cannot serve the Lord today.
None of us knows what tomorrow may bring. It may bring great joy. It may bring heartache. Simply, we have no control over that. We can take comfort in knowing that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). Our Heavenly Father will watch over us tomorrow. He may indeed allow some things to come our way which are challenging. However, even those things will benefit us as He uses them. All that said, we cannot dwell on this either. We must simply trust Him.
The only time we can actually affect is the present. Today we are alive. Today, we have opportunity to serve the Lord. This moment is what we must concentrate on. “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Whatever you are doing right now, do it for the glory of God. We do not know what tomorrow may bring. In fact, we do not know what the rest of this day may bring. But, we have this moment in time. God has given it to us. Right now, you have been given the opportunity to either serve God or serve this world. You cannot do both (Luke 16:13). The past teaches us that we all do things we regret. Do not let this moment be one of those times. Take this moment…this opportunity that has been graciously afforded you…and use it for the glory of God.
Child of God, quit concerning yourself with the problems that have already passed. Whatever you do, stop worrying about the troubles which may or may not ever come to pass. Your Heavenly Father has control of all of that. Live for today. Live for this moment. Take this very opportunity now to live your life for the glory of God. And whatever you do, thank Him Who gave you the opportunity.
