Confidence in God

Watering the Tulips

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble”Matthew 6:25-34

I can hardly talk to anybody the past few days without somebody mentioning the recent Supreme Court ruling about “Obamacare”.  Some are excited that the plan they have been wanting finally seems to have gotten approval.  Others are scared to death that this is the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for America.  How should we as believers feel?  What should our attitudes be?

First of all, a child of God should not put his trust in the government.  The teaching of Jesus here is plain – it is God that takes care of us.  God certainly wasn’t taken by surprise when the Supreme Court made their decision.  Our God has declared the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).  This decision has neither relieved God nor concerned Him.  His promises to us remain true whether the new law is effective or not.

The apostle Paul said, And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus(Philippians 4:19).  This guarantee was not dependent on the government of the United States of America or any other government, for that matter.  This promise is secured by the fact that our God is Sovereign over His creation.  Nothing hinders His will (Daniel 4:35).  No law can ever keep God from accomplishing all His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).

Are children of God then to ignore government and not care?  Absolutely not!  We are called to be good citizens.  We should cast our vote according to the principles of the Word of God.  However, whether things go our way or not, our trust must ultimately be in our God to supply our needs.

Child of God, make sure your trust is anchored in God – not man.
