“…to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved” – Ephesians 1:6

There is no greater need of man than to be accepted by God.  To state it plainly, mankind is simply unacceptable to God.  There is not a person that has ever lived (apart from Jesus Christ) who has been acceptable to God on his or her own merits.  Perhaps an explanation is in order.

The Lord couldn’t have been plainer when He inspired Paul to say, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  So, we, of our own will and volition, choose to sin on a regular basis.  However, our sinfulness goes back further than that.  Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned”.  We fell in the Garden.  Adam was the root of the human tree and we were the branches.  When Adam ate of the forbidden fruit, the axe was laid to the root of the tree and the entire tree fell.

The world stands guilty before God today.  Every one of us is a sinner and our sin must be dealt with.  God is holy and righteous and sin is a stench to Him.  There is a gap between our God and us that simply cannot be crossed.  Left to ourselves, each of us will die, stand guilty at the judgment and be sentenced to eternity in the Lake of Fire.  God being righteous can accept no less of a penalty for sin.

However, in His infinite wisdom, God had another way.  “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).  In Christ alone, we can stand before God as righteous.  Though Jesus was sinless, He was made to be sin on Calvary’s cross.  We deserved to be where He was.  And yet, God’s love for His own put His one and only Son on the cross to bear the sins of many (Hebrews 9:28).

Though today’s world would have us believe there are many ways to God, there is but one.  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).  Reconciliation with God can only be found in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  No other religion and no other plan can make us acceptable to God.  As our text verse plainly says, “He has made us accepted in the Beloved”.  God Himself accepts sinners on the basis that Christ paid their sin debt.

Our hope today is that you are trusting in Christ alone as your only Hope for Heaven.  If you are, it is “to the praise of the glory of His grace…”.
